Phi Beta Lambda

Phi Beta Lambda brings business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs.  PBL is the premier education association preparing students not only for careers in business but for success in life.  PBL members are encouraged to take on leadership positions and run for local, state, or national office in PBL.  PBL members participate in activities, organize community service projects, interact with local companies and their executives, attend state and national leadership conferences, and serve in a leadership position.

PBL focuses professional career development on encouraging capable, aggressive business leadership, strengthening confidence in and understanding the American business enterprise, encouraging individual members to contribue to the improvement of the community, and helps in developing character, citizenship, and patriotism.  PBL here at Hagerstown Community College is in its second year.  The club has held several meetings focuing on interviewing skills, building wealth from a young age, dress for success, etiquette dinners, and has also held and participated in many fundraisers on campus.

PBL is recognized and endorsed by many national organizations focused on education and management attainment.  PBL has a great website www.fbla-pbl.org that contains information about the national organization and the many services that are available to members.  The contact and advisor at Hagerstown Community College is Jim Pierne who can be reached at jgpierne@hagerstowncc.edu or by calling 240-500-2215.

The Leadership Club

The HCC Leadership Club has been on campus for three years. The goals of the club are to explore opportunities to learn about leadership development and practice leadership skills. The club works on criteria for the Maryland Community College Activities Directors Association Leadership Certificate. This certificate is a state-wide recognition of leadership development, which includes attending workshops and conferences, learning about leadership styles, working on leadership philosophies and mission statements, practicing leadership techniques, and more. Club members host leadership workshops, attend area student leadership conferences, work on service learning projects, and complete a leadership portfolio. The club meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 2:30 p.m. in the Student Center conference room. President is Allen Calvert, aecalvert@student.hagerstowncc.edu and advisor is Heather Barnhart, hbbarnhart@hagerstowncc.edu.

The Game Development Club

Our club was chartered to “further develop the skills and abilities of students interested in the video game industry.”   The main purpose of this organization is to provide the students of Hagerstown Community College the opportunity to meet, to learn about the game industry today, and to work together to complete game related projects.

Our meetings will consist of group discussion, working on games, presentations, etc.   Basically, we try to make games and have fun doing it.

We do some outside activities like take field trips, play/test games, have social events on campus and do game related giveaways.   We’re open to new ideas, too.  We like to get everyone involved in something.

The Chess Club

The Chess Club meets occasionally or weekly, as interest warrants, during the Fall and Spring semesters.  Players of all skill levels are welcome to attend.  There are no dues, and you do not need to bring a chess board or clock.  Please contact bgshepard@hagerstowncc.edu for information concerning meetings or if you have other questions about the club.

Phi Theta Kappa

ptklogo

Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society for two-year institutions. Our chapter here at HCC was established in 1968. The first mission of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize academic achievement. By attaining a cumulative grade point average after completing at least 12 college level (101 or above) credit hours, 15 if you are a part time student, individuals will be invited to join this prestigious society. Choosing to accept allows a student to wear honor regalia at graduation, the seal on one’s diploma, and become eligible for over $37 million in scholarships exclusively for members.

The second mission is to offer growth and development opportunities in our hallmark areas: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. “Phi Theta Kappa is one of the best organizations on campus to expand your comfort zone and be better prepared for life after college.” Whether it is through presenters at meetings, convention travel, projects of the chapter and region, or online programming, you will not find a single organization that offers as many opportunities as Phi Theta Kappa does at HCC!

This organization does several things to enhance the environment for children: fundraisers to replace or repair equipment, purchase supplies, organize family and friend activities, and a volunteer program to come in and read to children, do an art project, or any other activity or service to benefit the children and the Children’s Learning Center.
